1886 Flammarions Iguanodon dinosaur
From Flammarions " Le Monde avant la Creation de l Homme". This is the first dinosaur (Iguanodon) reconstruction to put them in modern context to reveal their size. In this case getting a meal from a fifth floor Parisian balcony. Such representations have become a staple of science fiction and fantasy writers ever since. The picture was perhaps stimulated by the discovery in 1878 of the 38 Belgium Bernissart Iguanodons in a coal mine - which were reconstructed for display in 1882. These fossils revealed that the horn of the iguanodon, first postulated by Gideon Mantell half a century before, was infact a modified thumb spike. Flammarions illustrators left them on the nose in any case

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the 1886 Flammarions Iguanodon dinosaur, a groundbreaking reconstruction that revolutionized our understanding of these ancient creatures. The image transports us to a fifth-floor Parisian balcony, where this magnificent beast is depicted in all its modern glory, revealing its true size and power. The significance of this illustration cannot be overstated. It marked the first time that dinosaurs were portrayed in a contemporary context, forever changing how we envision them. Since then, such representations have become iconic in science fiction and fantasy literature. The inspiration behind this picture can be traced back to the discovery of the Belgium Bernissart Iguanodons in 1878. These fossils were meticulously reconstructed for display in 1882 and shed light on many mysteries surrounding these prehistoric giants. Most notably, they revealed that what was once believed to be a horn on the iguanodon's nose was actually a modified thumb spike—a revelation initially postulated by Gideon Mantell fifty years earlier. Flammarion's illustrators decided to keep the horn on the nose despite this new knowledge, adding an element of artistic interpretation to their work. This stunning art piece captures not only scientific accuracy but also imagination and creativity. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of both the awe-inspiring nature of dinosaurs and humanity's unending curiosity about our planet's distant past.
