Biorock reef restoration, Indonesia C016 / 8110

Biorock reef restoration. Marine biologist attaching coral fragments to a Biorock reef restoration structure. The Biorock process was developed by Thomas Goreau and Wolf Hilbertz in the 1970 s. Electricity is used to promote the deposition of calcium carbonate, which builds up on the surface of the structure giving hard corals a base to bond to. The process is thought to accelerate coral growth by up to four times - however, it has been suggested that simple wire meshes are just as effective. The resulting reef of hard coral soon attracts other inhabitants and the process has been touted as a way to rehabilitate reefs in all tropical areas. Photographed in Gili Trawangan, Lombok, Indonesia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the innovative Biorock reef restoration process taking place in Indonesia. In this image, a dedicated marine biologist can be seen delicately attaching coral fragments to a Biorock reef restoration structure. Developed by Thomas Goreau and Wolf Hilbertz in the 1970s, this groundbreaking technique utilizes electricity to promote the deposition of calcium carbonate on the surface of the structure, providing a solid foundation for hard corals to bond with. The Biorock process is believed to accelerate coral growth up to four times faster than natural methods, making it an invaluable tool for rehabilitating degraded reefs across tropical regions. However, some experts argue that simple wire meshes can achieve similar results. Nevertheless, once established, these artificial reefs become thriving ecosystems attracting various marine inhabitants. Photographed off Gili Trawangan in Lombok, Indonesia, this mesmerizing snapshot captures both human ingenuity and nature's resilience coming together underwater. The image highlights the collaboration between man and sea as scientists work tirelessly to repair damaged coral habitats using cutting-edge technology. With its vibrant colors and intricate details of corals being secured onto the structure under water through electrolysis, this photograph serves as a powerful reminder of our responsibility towards protecting our fragile marine environments. It symbolizes hope for future generations as we strive to rehabilitate and preserve these vital ecosystems in Southeast Asia and beyond.
