Centaurus A galaxy, HST image
Centaurus A galaxy. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the active galaxy Centaurus A, which is thought to house a massive black hole. Centaurus A is a large elliptical galaxy which collided with a smaller spiral galaxy millions of years ago, sparking a huge burst of starbirth activity. Large areas of young blue stars are seen on either side of the dark lane of dust. This dust is thought to be the remnant of the smaller galaxy which Centaurus A swallowed. Centaurus A is also a powerful emitter of radio waves powered by its black hole. It lies 10 million light years from Earth in the constellation Centaurus. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Centaurus A galaxy, captured by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Known for its active nature, this massive elliptical galaxy is believed to harbor a colossal black hole at its core. The image reveals the aftermath of a collision between Centaurus A and a smaller spiral galaxy millions of years ago, igniting an extraordinary burst of starbirth activity. The dark lane of dust that cuts through the center of the galaxy is thought to be remnants from the devoured smaller galaxy. On either side of this dusty lane, vast regions adorned with young blue stars can be observed. These stellar nurseries are evidence of ongoing star formation within Centaurus A. Not only does this galactic marvel exhibit stunning visual features, but it also emits powerful radio waves due to its black hole's influence. Located 10 million light-years away in the constellation Centaurus, Centaurus A continues to fascinate astronomers and astrophysicists alike. Captured in July 2010 using HST's Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3), this awe-inspiring image provides us with a glimpse into one corner of our vast universe. Science Photo Library presents this remarkable piece as part of their collection dedicated to space exploration and astronomical wonders.
