EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the monumental task of constructing the Eastern Siberia-Pacific Ocean (ESPO) oil pipeline in Russia. The image showcases the sheer scale and complexity of this engineering feat, which aims to export Russian crude oil to East Asian countries like China, Japan, and Korea. The construction of this 4700-kilometre-long pipeline began in April 2006 and is set for completion in 2017. To ensure maximum precision during its installation, satellite equipment is utilized throughout the project. One can only imagine the level of expertise and technological advancements required to cross a staggering 107 rivers and lakes along its path. Taken at the Angara River in Siberia back in May 2007, this photograph encapsulates both industrial prowess and natural beauty. The sight of workers diligently fitting pipes underwater serves as a testament to human ingenuity merging with nature's resources. As we step into the 21st century, projects like these highlight our reliance on fossil fuels for energy needs while also showcasing how technology plays an integral role in their extraction and transportation. This image from Science Photo Library not only documents a significant moment but also invites contemplation about our global interconnectedness through trade routes that span continents.
