Fly life cycle, artwork C018 / 0298
Fly life cycle. Diagram and artworks showing the stages in the life cycle of a fly. The winged adult stage is at top centre. The female lays eggs (upper right) that are around 1.2 millimetres in length. These contain embryos and hatch into larvae around 3 millimetres long. Three sizes (instars) of larvae are shown here (across bottom). Once the fly larva (maggot) has reached a certain size (7 to 12 millimetres), it forms a pupal stage (upper left, 8 millimetres long). The adult fly (6 to 7 millimetres long) emerges from the pupa. The whole cycle can last between 10 days and two months depending on conditions

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Fly life cycle, artwork C018 / 0298" takes us on a visual journey through the stages of a fly's life. Against a clean white background, this intricate illustration showcases the remarkable transformation that these tiny creatures undergo. At the top center, we see the magnificent winged adult fly in all its glory. It is here that the female lays her minuscule eggs, measuring around 1.2 millimeters in length (upper right). These eggs contain precious embryos that soon hatch into larvae approximately 3 millimeters long. The bottom row displays three different sizes or instars of these larvae, highlighting their growth and development over time. Once they reach a certain size (7 to 12 millimeters), they enter the pupal stage (upper left), forming an intriguing cocoon-like structure measuring 8 millimeters long. After undergoing metamorphosis within this pupal casing, an astonishing transformation occurs as the adult fly emerges from its temporary home. The fully developed adult measures between 6 to 7 millimeters in length and is ready to take flight into the world. It is fascinating to note that this entire life cycle can vary in duration depending on environmental conditions, lasting anywhere between 10 days and two months. This artwork provides valuable insight into one of nature's most extraordinary processes – showcasing both beauty and complexity within each stage of reproduction for these dipteran insects known as flies.
