Hoover Factory
Hoover Factory, Greenford, London, UK. This building was designed by the British architect firm Wallis, Gilbert and Partners and built between 1931 and 1938. The factory was built in steel-reinforced concrete designed to stay pure white in colour, which kept the building looking clean. The Hoover factory closed down in the early 1980s and remained in disuse until 1989 when Tesco, a British supermarket chain, purchased the site. As part of the site redevelopment, Tesco restored the canteen and main building frontage. Photographed in 1998

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Hoover Factory in Greenford, London. Designed by the esteemed British architect firm Wallis, Gilbert and Partners, this architectural marvel was constructed between 1931 and 1938. The building's striking feature is its steel-reinforced concrete structure that was specifically designed to maintain a pristine white color, ensuring a perpetually clean appearance. After serving as a prominent manufacturing hub for several decades, the Hoover factory sadly closed its doors in the early 1980s. However, it found new life when Tesco, a renowned British supermarket chain, acquired the site in 1989. As part of their redevelopment efforts, Tesco meticulously restored the canteen and main building frontage to preserve its historical significance. The photograph itself was taken in 1998 and showcases not only the grandeur of this art deco masterpiece but also highlights its technological prowess. With elements of both engineering and artistic brilliance on display, this image truly encapsulates the fusion of style and functionality that defined architecture during the 1930s. The Hoover Factory stands as an enduring symbol of British ingenuity and serves as a testament to our rich industrial heritage. Its restoration by Tesco ensures that future generations can appreciate its beauty while embracing modernity within its walls. This remarkable photograph from Science Photo Library allows us to relish in both nostalgia and progress simultaneously
