Hubert Anson Newton (1830-1896), US astronomer and mathematician. Newton studied mathematics at Yale University, USA, later becoming a professor and chairman of the mathematics department. He worked chiefly on meteors and is best known for calculating the length (thirty-three years) of the Leonid meteor shower cycle. In 1833 he successfully predicted its next peak. Newton used historical records to trace the appearance of the shower as far back as A.D. 902
