Nikolai Sklifosovsky, Russian surgeon

Nikolai Vasilyevich Sklifosovsky (1836-1904), Russian surgeon. Sklifosovsky, who was also a physiologist and a professor of medicine, worked in Moscow, St Petersburg and Kiev. He was one of the surgeons that pioneered aseptic treatments for wound infections. He is also remembered for being the first to remove congenital cerebral hernias under antiseptic conditions (1881). He was born in what is now Moldova, and is buried in the village of Yaskovtsy, in the Ukraine, where he had a summer home. Photographed in Russia
