End of magnet for Large Hadron Collider
Magnet for the Large Hadron Collider. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the new accelerator for CERN, the European particle physics laboratory at Geneva. This is an end-on view of one of the cylindrical bending magnets. A test cable is seen inserted into one of the twin beam pipes down which bunches of protons or heavy ions will be accelerated in opposite directions at very close to the speed of light. The beam pipes are encased in a cryostat jacket which will be cooled to 1. 8 degrees Kelvin using liquid helium. This allows superconducting wire to be used, making possible the very strong magnetic fields needed to bend the proton beams around the LHCs 27-km circumference

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the end of a magnet for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), an extraordinary accelerator located at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory in Geneva. The image provides an end-on view of one of the cylindrical bending magnets used within this groundbreaking scientific facility. Intriguingly, a test cable can be seen inserted into one of the twin beam pipes that will propel bunches of protons or heavy ions in opposite directions at nearly the speed of light. These beam pipes are encased within a cryostat jacket, which will be cooled to an astonishingly low temperature of 1.8 degrees Kelvin using liquid helium. This extreme cooling enables superconducting wire to be utilized, allowing for the creation of immensely powerful magnetic fields necessary to guide and bend proton beams around LHC's colossal 27-kilometer circumference. The significance and complexity behind this technological marvel cannot be overstated. It represents humanity's relentless pursuit to unravel nature's deepest secrets by pushing boundaries in particle physics research. The LHC stands as a testament to our collective curiosity and determination as we strive to understand fundamental particles and their interactions on a microscopic scale. This awe-inspiring photograph from Science Photo Library not only captures the intricate details but also symbolizes mankind's unwavering quest for knowledge at CERN – Europe's premier center for nuclear research.
