Port of Odessa, 1890s

Port of Odessa. 19th-century photochrom (photographic lithograph) showing the port pratique area of the Port of Odessa on the shores of the Black Sea. Now part of Ukraine, this port was at the time part of the Russian Empire, of which it was one of the largest grain-exporting ports. This scene shows horse-drawn carts (lower right), railway trains (across centre) and shipping (background). The port pratique area is where ships are examined and cleared for quarantine purposes. It can also refer to an unloading area for onward shipping of cargo and people. This photochrom dates from between circa 1890 and circa 1900
