Sage leaf oil gland. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of hairs and a gland on a leaf of the herb sage, Salvia officinalis. On the leaf surface are two types of hairs, called trichomes. Many thin multicellular hairs which serve a protective function for the plant, or reduce surface evaporation. The spherical structure is a modified glandular hair which secretes oils associated with the odour and essence of sage. The leaves of sage are used for cooking. They also have medicinal properties which reduce fever, cleanse the blood, relieve pain, and are antiseptic. Magnification: x395 at 5x7cm size
