1860s Charles Lyell portrait photo cdv

CDV photograph of Sir Charles Lyell (14th November 1797-22 February 1875) by John Watkins taken some time in the 1860 s. Lyell began his career as a lawyer, but abandoned it in 1827 in favour of geology. He became famous for his three volume " Principles of Geology" (1830-1833) which proposed a uniformitarian view of geology as Hutton had before him. He believed geological processes were mostly gradual and ongoing, such that present processes can be a reliable guide to the past. His work had a great impact on Charles Darwin who believed he was taking this concept of gradual change into biology. Charles Lyell strongly opposed evolution (transmutation) in his second volume of the " Principles of Geology" but was a sympathetic ear and partial convert to Darwinism later in life. In 1863 he published his highly influential, " Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man"

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Sir Charles Lyell, a prominent figure in the field of geology during the 19th century. Taken by John Watkins in the 1860s, this CDV photograph showcases Lyell's distinguished appearance and intellectual prowess. Lyell's journey began as a lawyer but he soon found his true passion in geology. His groundbreaking work, "Principles of Geology" published between 1830 and 1833, revolutionized scientific understanding by proposing a uniformitarian view of geological processes. He believed that gradual changes over time could explain Earth's history and that present processes were key to deciphering the past. Interestingly, it was Lyell's ideas on gradual change that greatly influenced another renowned scientist - Charles Darwin. Although initially opposed to evolution or transmutation, as he called it, Lyell eventually became open-minded towards Darwinism later in life. In 1863, Lyell published his influential work "Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man" which provided compelling evidence for human origins and antiquity. This further solidified his reputation as an esteemed geologist who contributed significantly to our understanding of Earth's history. Paul D. Stewart expertly presents this historical gem from Science Photo Library without mentioning any commercial use or affiliations with companies. The image beautifully encapsulates not only Charles Lyell himself but also represents an era marked by scientific discovery and intellectual debates surrounding human evolution and our ancient past.
