Thomas Hobbes, caricature

Thomas Hobbes. Caricature of the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679). Hobbes led a sheltered and long life, mostly as secretary and teacher to the family of Lord Cavendish, Earl of Devonshire. His major work, Leviathan (1651) described society in terms of mathematics and science. He travelled in Europe from 1634-1637, meeting scientists and philosophers such as Galileo and Descartes. He fled Englands Civil War in 1640, living with the exiled royal court in France for the next eleven years. His views were deemed heretical, and his books were banned in 1666

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a caricature of the renowned English philosopher, Thomas Hobbes. With a comical twist, this illustration captures the essence of Hobbes' life and ideas. Born in 1588, Hobbes led a sheltered existence as secretary and teacher to Lord Cavendish's family, the Earl of Devonshire. However, his intellectual pursuits knew no bounds. Hobbes is best known for his groundbreaking work "Leviathan" published in 1651. In this masterpiece, he described society through the lens of mathematics and science - an innovative approach that challenged traditional philosophical thinking. During his travels across Europe from 1634 to 1637, he had the privilege of meeting esteemed scientists like Galileo and philosophers such as Descartes. The turbulent times during England's Civil War forced Hobbes into exile in France where he resided with the exiled royal court for eleven years starting from 1640. His unorthodox views were considered heretical by many leading figures at that time, resulting in a ban on his books in 1666. This monochrome artwork not only portrays Hobbes' controversial nature but also reflects upon his significant contributions to Western philosophy. As an atheist thinker who delved into sociology and social studies alongside mathematical concepts, Hobbes left an indelible mark on history. Science Photo Library presents this historical gem capturing one of Britain's most influential intellectuals whose legacy continues to shape our understanding of society today.
