Soviet Katyusha rocket launchers, 1942

Soviet Katyusha rocket launchers being used in Stalingrad, USSR, in 1942, to attack German positions during World War II. War broke out between Germany and the USSR in June 1941, when Germany invaded the USSR. Katyushas were a type of multiple rocket launcher developed by the USSR before and during World War II. Compared to normal artillery, these launchers were more mobile, and though less accurate could still saturate an area with explosives and then redeploy elsewhere. Photographed on 21st October 1942, during the Battle of Stalingrad
