Supersonic shock waves, Schlieren image
Supersonic shock waves. Schlieren image showing the shock wave created by a supersonic jet flying in front of the Sun. Schlieren imaging is a method used to visualise density variations in transparent media. Here, it has been used to view the propagating disturbance in air created by an aircraft moving at the speed of sound. The method requires a bright light source and/or speckled background. In this case, the solar disc has been used, a technique called Background-Oriented Schlieren using Celestial Objects (BOSCO)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring power of supersonic shock waves in a truly remarkable way. Taken by NASA, this Schlieren image captures the shock wave generated by a high-speed jet as it soars through the sky against the backdrop of a blazing sun. The technique used to capture this stunning visual is known as Schlieren imaging, which allows us to observe density variations in transparent media. In order to create such an extraordinary image, a bright light source and speckled background were employed. In this case, the radiant solar disc was utilized, employing a unique method called Background-Oriented Schlieren using Celestial Objects (BOSCO). The resulting composite image reveals the propagating disturbance caused by an aircraft moving at supersonic speeds. The intricate details showcased here shed light on fluid dynamics and flow phenomena associated with aviation and flight. This mesmerizing display not only highlights the technological advancements achieved in aerospace engineering but also serves as a testament to our understanding of physics and its application in real-world scenarios. As we gaze upon this red-hued masterpiece, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and exploration. It is through endeavors like these that we continue pushing boundaries, unraveling mysteries, and expanding our horizons both within our atmosphere and beyond.
