EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the textbooks owned by the renowned Russian scientist and polymath, Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov. The larger book featured in the image is "Arithmetics" by Leonty Magnitsky, while the smaller one is "Melety Smotritskys Slavonic Grammar". Lomonosov, born in a remote fishing village, embarked on a journey to Moscow to pursue his education. After a brief period of studying abroad, he returned to Russia and established what is now known as Moscow State University. Lomonosov's intellectual prowess extended far beyond academia. He served as a secretary of state for Russia and made significant contributions across various fields such as astronomy, natural history, physics of heat, and even poetry. His groundbreaking work debunked Boyle's phlogiston theory. Captured at the Lomonosov Museum in Lomonosov, Russia, this monochrome photograph exudes an air of historical significance. The black-and-white composition beautifully contrasts with the Cyrillic text adorning these 18th-century textbooks. It serves as a testament to Lomonosov's thirst for knowledge and his dedication to advancing scientific understanding during that era. This remarkable snapshot offers us a glimpse into both Russian history and the life of an extraordinary individual whose influence continues to resonate today.
