Thrust SSC, the worlds first supersonic car
Thrust SuperSonic Car (SSC), the first land vehicle to travel faster than sound, performs a speed trial. The car broke the land speed record on 15 October 1997 near Gerlach in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, USA. It travelled at an average speed of 1227 kilometres per hour (km/h) - about 24 km/h faster than sound - over two runs that took place within an hour of each other. The car was powered by two jet engines from a fighter aircraft. The British Thrust SSC team included driver Andy Green & team leader Richard Noble; the latter had him- self set a land speed record in 1983. Thrust SSCs success occurred the day after the fiftieth anni- versary of the first supersonic flight

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment when Thrust SSC, the world's first supersonic car, shattered all expectations and broke the land speed record. The sleek and powerful vehicle, powered by two jet engines from a fighter aircraft, achieved an astonishing average speed of 1227 kilometers per hour (km/h), surpassing the sound barrier by approximately 24 km/h. The groundbreaking achievement took place on October 15th, 1997 near Gerlach in Nevada's Black Rock Desert, USA. Within just one hour, driver Andy Green fearlessly piloted Thrust SSC to victory during two remarkable runs. This triumph was made possible through the relentless efforts of the British Thrust SSC team led by Richard Noble - himself a record-setter in land speed back in 1983. Coincidentally, this monumental feat occurred on the fiftieth anniversary of humanity's first supersonic flight. It symbolizes not only mankind's insatiable thirst for technological advancement but also our unwavering determination to push beyond perceived limits. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring image captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of how science and engineering can converge to achieve what once seemed impossible. Thrust SSC stands as a testament to human ingenuity and serves as an inspiration for future generations who dare to dream big and challenge boundaries within transportation technology.
