Total solar eclipse with corona

Total solar eclipse. Digitally enhanced composite of 22 images of the total solar eclipse of 11 August 1999. The solar corona (white) has been enhanced, highlighting outlying waves and filaments. The solar corona, which is not normally visible, is the Suns outermost and hottest layer. The image also shows the Moon emitting a faint glow. This is caused by doubly reflected sunlight, the phenomenon known as Earthshine. Earthshine is caused by sunlight reflecting off Earth onto the Moon and back to Earth. Eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, and casts its shadow across the Earth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring moment of a total solar eclipse, showcasing the Sun's corona in all its glory. Digitally enhanced using 22 images taken during the total solar eclipse on August 11,1999, this composite image beautifully highlights the intricate waves and filaments that make up the normally invisible solar corona. The corona, which is the outermost and hottest layer of our star, shines brilliantly in white against the darkened backdrop of space. Its ethereal beauty is further accentuated by the faint glow emitted by our Moon. This phenomenon, known as Earthshine or doubly reflected sunlight, occurs when sunlight reflects off Earth onto the Moon and then back to Earth. Eclipses like this occur when our celestial neighbor passes between Earth and the Sun, casting its shadow across our planet. It is a rare spectacle that never fails to captivate both scientists and enthusiasts alike. This mesmerizing image serves as a reminder of humanity's fascination with astronomy and cosmology. It invites us to marvel at nature's wonders beyond our own world while igniting curiosity about what lies beyond. As we gaze upon this breathtaking scene captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of how small we are in comparison to the vastness of space yet inspired to explore its mysteries further.
