EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Science Photo Library takes us on a mesmerizing journey to the red planet, Mars. Captured by the Viking 1 spacecraft on June 17,1976, as it approached its destination, this image showcases some of Mars' most remarkable geological features. At first glance, our eyes are drawn to the majestic Olympus Mons, standing tall at the top right of the photograph. This colossal volcano is not only the tallest known volcano in our solar system but also one of its most awe-inspiring sights. Moving towards the center-right of the picture, we encounter three volcanos that form what is known as Tharsis Mountains. These volcanic peaks create an impressive and dramatic landscape that adds to Mars' mystique. As we explore further into this Martian vista, our gaze falls upon a dark smudge located at lower right – none other than Argyre impact basin. This basin was formed billions of years ago due to a massive asteroid or comet impact and serves as a reminder of Mars' tumultuous past. Taken from a distance of approximately 560,000 km away from Mars itself, this photograph offers us a glimpse into another world entirely. It reminds us just how vast and diverse our universe truly is and ignites curiosity about what lies beyond Earth's boundaries. With its rich scientific significance in astronomy and planetary exploration, this stunning visual representation provided by Science Photo Library allows us to appreciate both the beauty and complexity present within our neighboring planet - Mars.
