EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of the Sheffield Association in aid of the Adult Deaf and Dumb. Established in 1862, this association dedicated itself to improving the lives of individuals who were deaf and mute, providing them with support and opportunities for employment. The photograph showcases a group of individuals communicating through sign language, their hands gracefully forming the words "I am thine, O Lord". The image is not only a testament to the resilience and determination of these remarkable individuals but also highlights the importance of inclusivity and equal opportunities for all members of society. It serves as a reminder that disabilities should never hinder one's ability to contribute meaningfully to their community. Originally located on Division Street, this association moved to purpose-built premises on Charles Street during the 1890s. Sadly, these premises were demolished in 1966. However, an enduring symbol remains from this era - a font created by one of its own members was installed at the institute's premises in 1911. This print is sourced from Sheffield Association in aid of the Adult Deaf and Dumb Jubilee Souvenir published between 1861-1911. It offers us a glimpse into an important chapter in Sheffield's history while honoring those who tirelessly worked towards promoting wellbeing among deaf and mute individuals within our society.
