A large antenna operated at Deep Space Station 41 in Australia

This 26 meter (85 foot) antenna operated in Woomera (Island Lagoon), Australia at Deep Space Station (DSS) 41, established in August 1960. The Island Lagoon site was the first deep space station to be established outside the United States and the first Australian antenna NASA built. The station was operated by the Australian Department of Supply and helped support the Ranger and early Mariner missions, as well as communications from the Deep Space Network (DSN) complex in Goldstone, California via a moon bounce. Woomers antenna ceased operations in 1972

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the impressive sight of a large antenna operating at Deep Space Station 41 in Australia. Standing tall at 26 meters (85 feet), this antenna was located in Woomera, specifically on Island Lagoon. Established in August 1960, it holds significant historical value as the first deep space station to be established outside the United States and also served as NASA's inaugural Australian antenna. Operated by the Australian Department of Supply, this station played a crucial role in supporting various missions such as Ranger and early Mariner, along with facilitating communications from the Deep Space Network complex in Goldstone, California through a moon bounce technique. However, after serving its purpose for over a decade, Woomera's antenna ceased operations in 1972. The photograph captures the essence of this obsolete yet remarkable structure against an enchanting night sky backdrop. Its towering presence symbolizes decades of research and technological advancements within telecommunications and space exploration. This image not only serves as a testament to our past achievements but also highlights the significance of international collaboration when it comes to unraveling mysteries beyond our planet. With no human presence visible within the frame, this stunning piece transports viewers into an era where scientific endeavors were paramount. The illuminated antenna stands proudly amidst its surroundings - an observatory-like structure that once facilitated radar observation and radio astronomy activities. It is indeed an awe-inspiring reminder of how far we have come on our journey into deep space exploration.
