Brandon Estate, Southwark, one of the largest of the London County Couincils housing estates

Brandon Estate, Southwark, one of the largest of the London County Couincils housing estates. There are six 18-storey blocks which rise to 170 ft to give a fine view over London, and a feature of these blocks are the penthouses, of which there are four in each comprising bed-sitting room flats, and sixty-four 3-room flats. Each flat has its own private balcony, constant hot water and warm air central heating. The estate covers an area of 36 acres to the south-east of Kennington Park, and replaces an area of dingy 19th century houses interspersed with bombsites. As wells the tall blocks, there are mainsonettes and two-storey houses for families who want gardens, bungalows for old people.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the impressive Brandon Estate in Southwark, which stands as one of the largest housing estates developed by the London County Council. The estate boasts six towering 18-storey blocks that soar to a height of 170 ft, offering residents breathtaking panoramic views of the bustling cityscape below. A notable feature of these blocks are the penthouses, with four in each block comprising bed-sitting room flats and sixty-four spacious 3-room flats. Each dwelling is equipped with its own private balcony, ensuring residents can enjoy fresh air and take in the vibrant surroundings. Spanning across an expansive area of 36 acres southeast of Kennington Park, this modern estate has replaced a once gloomy landscape dotted with dilapidated 19th-century houses and bomb sites. In addition to the high-rise buildings, there are also maisonettes and two-storey houses tailored for families seeking green spaces and bungalows thoughtfully designed for elderly residents. Constructed during a transformative era in London's history - the swinging sixties - this photograph captures not only architectural marvels but also reflects changing living conditions and aspirations during that time period. It serves as a testament to how urban planning initiatives aimed at improving residential environments have shaped communities for decades to come.
