(colour litho) by Beltrame, Achille (1871-1945); Private Collection; (add.info.: Having seen a burning ship off the coast of Nice, the Livorno steamer bound for Genoa rushed to the rescue, just in time to save twenty-nine people from a Norwegian ship who took refuge in the lifeboats. A Heroic Rescue - The Livorno Steamer's Brave Efforts to Save Lives

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this color lithograph by Achille Beltrame, we witness a dramatic scene off the coast of Nice. A burning ship looms in the background, billowing thick smoke into the sky. The Livorno steamer, bound for Genoa, rushes towards the distressed vessel with urgency and determination. As we delve deeper into the story behind this image, we learn that twenty-nine people from a Norwegian ship sought refuge in lifeboats as their own vessel succumbed to flames. These desperate survivors were fortunate enough to catch sight of the approaching Italian steamer just in time. The stormy sea makes it challenging for both crews to carry out the transshipment safely. Bound together by ropes, they patiently wait for each fragile boat to be carried by waves up to deck level. With incredible bravery and skill, they manage to rescue one castaway after another from their perilous situation. Beltrame's illustration captures not only the intensity of this rescue mission but also highlights acts of heroism amidst chaos and danger. It serves as a powerful reminder of humanity's capacity for compassion and selflessness even in times of crisis. This artwork was originally created as an illustration for Courier Sunday on December 24th, 1933 – a testament to its enduring impact throughout history.
