Traffic between the Lines, 1876 - Witnessing Cooperation Amidst Conflict

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This etching by Edwin Austin Forbes offers a glimpse into an extraordinary moment during the American Civil War. Titled "Traffic between the Lines" this print depicts a scene of unexpected camaraderie and trade amidst the chaos of battle. Created by Forbes, who traveled with the Union Army from 1862 to 1865, this artwork showcases his keen eye as an eyewitness. Marked as "Plate 35" it captures pickets engaging in commerce for coffee and tobacco during a truce between fortified lines. In the background, we see enemy works protected by abattis and cheveaux-de-frise while soldiers gather on parapets. The landscape is dominated by tree stumps left over from what was likely once a dense forest decimated to build these fortifications. This visual reminder of destruction adds depth to our understanding of wartime conditions. Forbes' etching highlights not only the resilience but also the humanity that can emerge even in times of conflict. It reveals how soldiers on opposing sides found common ground through exchange and cooperation despite their differences. As we explore this remarkable piece from Fine Art Finder's collection at Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, we are transported back to that tumultuous era when North America was divided. Through Forbes' artistry, we gain insight into both the hardships endured and moments of connection experienced by those involved in one of history's most significant conflicts – The American Civil War.
