The 13th was one of the two regiments sent with Major-General Robert Sale to Jalalabad during the 1st Afghan War (1839-1842). The regiment had been part of the invading Army of the Indus in 1839, and took a vital part in the storming of Ghazni fort. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a shell jacket worn by other ranks of the 13th (1st Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot, also known as Prince Albert's Light Infantry. Created around 1848, this British School masterpiece is housed in the National Army Museum in London. The historical significance of this garment cannot be understated. The 13th Regiment played a crucial role during the 1st Afghan War from 1839 to 1842. Led by Major-General Robert Sale, they were among the two regiments dispatched to Jalalabad. Having been part of the invading Army of the Indus in 1839, their valorous efforts included storming Ghazni fort and defending Jalalabad against formidable odds. Their unwavering dedication and bravery earned them the prestigious title "Prince Albert's Own" and bestowed upon them royal blue facings at their collars, as depicted in this image. This distinctive feature sets them apart from other regiments and symbolizes their exceptional service. As we admire this remarkable piece captured by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder, let us remember those who served selflessly under these jackets. Their sacrifices echo through history and remind us of our duty to honor their memory.
