Popular Superstitions: Stumbling and falling (colour litho)

8668726 Popular Superstitions: Stumbling and falling (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Stumbling and falling. When William the Conqueror leaped ashore at Bulverhythe he stumbled and fell. His followers would have considered this a fatal omen, but with great presence of mind he exclaimed: "Behold! I have taken seisin of this land with both my hands." The omens attached to stumbling and falling have what may be regarded as a natural basis of thought, for as in the above case, the attention is eagerly fixed on the opening stages of any enterprise and a fall under such circumstances would appear, if not a catastrophe itself, the outward sign of one to come. EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour lithograph print titled "Popular Superstitions: Stumbling and falling" by the English School from the 20th century captures a moment of superstition and folklore. The image depicts William the Conqueror stumbling and falling as he leaped ashore at Bulverhythe, a moment that could have been seen as a fatal omen by his followers. However, with quick thinking, William declared that he had taken seisin of the land with both hands, turning what could have been a bad omen into a positive one. The superstition surrounding stumbling and falling is explored in this artwork, highlighting how such events were believed to be signs of impending catastrophe or misfortune. This illustration is part of a set of 25 cigarette cards on Popular Superstitions issued by Godfrey Phillips in 1930, providing insight into common beliefs and practices from history. The vibrant colours and detailed imagery bring this historical scene to life, capturing the essence of superstition and belief in earlier times. It serves as a reminder of how our perceptions shape our understanding of events and how superstitions can influence our actions. This print is not just an artistic representation but also a window into past beliefs and traditions.
