EDITORS COMMENTS
The Sack of Magdeburg on 20 May 1631 was a devastating event during the Thirty Years War, where the Protestant city of Magdeburg was destroyed by the Imperial Army and forces of the Catholic League. This print captures the chaos and destruction of that fateful day, known as Magdeburg's Wedding or Magdeburg's Sacrifice. In this engraving from L'Univers Illustre, published in Paris in 1859, we see the city engulfed in flames as soldiers pillage and plunder. The scene is one of utter devastation, with buildings crumbling and smoke filling the sky. The artist has captured the horror and tragedy of war with incredible detail, showcasing the brutality and violence that occurred during this dark period in history. The Sack of Magdeburg serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of conflict and serves as a poignant symbol of loss and suffering. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of the importance of peace and unity, for it is only through understanding our past mistakes that we can strive towards a better future. Let us never forget the sacrifices made by those who came before us, so that we may work towards a world free from such atrocities.
