Portrait of a royalist, c.1643 (oil on canvas)

7338095 Portrait of a royalist, c.1643 (oil on canvas) by Dobson, William (1611-46); 96.5x77.5 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: William Dobson
A half-length portrait of an unknown Royalist naval commander. He wears a salmon-pink doublet, with braid on his collar and sleeves. Over his left arm, a drape of blue material may also symbolize the sea. He holds the hilt of his sword in his right hand. In his left hand he holds a paper, thought to be either a chart, or his naval commission. Behind the sitter, to the left, a contrived sculptural relief of an allegorical female figure holds a globe and dividers. Globes symbolised learning and scholarship, and with compasses or dividers, and other instruments formed the attributes of geometry, one of the Seven Liberal Arts.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait, painted by William Dobson in 1643, captures the essence of a Royalist naval commander during the turbulent times of the 17th century. The unknown sitter is depicted in a salmon-pink doublet adorned with intricate braid detailing on his collar and sleeves, exuding an air of authority and sophistication. In his right hand, he firmly grasps the hilt of his sword, symbolizing strength and leadership. Meanwhile, in his left hand rests a paper believed to be either a nautical chart or his naval commission, highlighting his dedication to serving at sea. The blue drape draped over his arm further emphasizes this connection to the maritime world. Behind him stands an allegorical female figure holding a globe and dividers, representing knowledge and scholarship. This symbolic imagery adds depth to the composition and hints at the sitter's intellectual pursuits beyond just military matters. Overall, this painting not only showcases Dobson's skillful technique but also offers a glimpse into the life of a Royalist officer during this tumultuous period in British history. It serves as a reminder of the complexities and nuances that defined individuals who fought for their beliefs during times of political upheaval.
