The Battle of the Gabbard, 2 June 1653, c.1653 (grisaille on panel)

7337610 The Battle of the Gabbard, 2 June 1653, c.1653 (grisaille on panel) by Witmont, Heerman (c.1605-c.83); 111.8x179.1 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Heerman Witmont
A large grisaille drawing in brown ink. It shows the English and Dutch fleets engaged during the Battle of the Gabbard, 2 June 1653. The increasing conflict of trade interests between England and the Netherlands in the first half of the 17th century came to a head in 1651, when Cromwell's Navigation Act restricted English trade to English ships and thereby struck at the Dutch position as the carriers of Europe'. A Dutch diplomatic mission to resolve problems failed and the first of three rapidly ensuing Anglo-Dutch sea wars that lasted to 1674 broke out in 1652 (-1654).); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle of the Gabbard, 2 June 1653, captured in this stunning grisaille print by Heerman Witmont, transports us back to a pivotal moment in history. The intense conflict between England and the Netherlands over trade interests culminated in a fierce naval battle that forever changed the course of European politics. In this intricate drawing, we see the English and Dutch fleets locked in combat, their ships engulfed in smoke and chaos. The tension is palpable as each side fights for supremacy on the open sea. Witmont's attention to detail brings every aspect of this historic event to life - from the billowing sails to the determined expressions of the sailors. As we gaze upon this masterpiece, we are reminded of the high stakes involved in international relations during the 17th century. The consequences of this battle reverberated throughout Europe for years to come, shaping alliances and power dynamics across the continent. This print serves as a powerful reminder of our shared history and the sacrifices made by those who fought bravely for their nations.
