EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration captures a pivotal moment in naval history - the first trial of a torpedo fired by the Nautilus submarine in 1905. The target? The Danish ship 'Dorothee', provided by the British Admiralty, which met its demise in Walmer Bay. Standing witness to this groundbreaking event was none other than Prime Minister William Pitt. The mastermind behind the Nautilus submarine was Robert Fulton, an American engineer and inventor known for his innovative designs. Commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1800, Fulton set out to create the world's first practical submarine - a feat that would revolutionize naval warfare. Fulton's ingenuity extended beyond submarines; he also developed some of the earliest naval torpedoes used by the British Royal Navy. His contributions to maritime technology were truly ahead of their time. As we gaze upon this historical depiction, we are transported back to a time when innovation and exploration knew no bounds. The clash of metal against water echoes through the ages, reminding us of humanity's relentless pursuit of progress on both land and sea.
