EDITORS COMMENTS
After a long and treacherous voyage, Harold Godwinson finds himself in the clutches of Count Wido. This chromolithograph, created by Charles Alfred Stothard and reproduced by William Mossman in 1856, captures the dramatic moment when Harold is seized upon his arrival on land. In this scene, we witness Harold standing alone on a ship, dressed only in a chlamys - a symbol of vulnerability amidst the chaos that surrounds him. The Saxon sailing vessels anchor nearby as they too become part of this fateful encounter. Count Wido's presence looms large as he seizes Harold with an iron grip, ensuring his capture. This artwork was originally commissioned for Rev. John Collingwood Bruces' book 'The Bayeux Tapestry Elucidated', published in London during the mid-19th century. It serves to shed light on one of history's pivotal moments - the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Harold Godwinson's capture marked a turning point in English history and ultimately led to his defeat at the hands of William the Conqueror. Through this stunning print, we are transported back to that tumultuous time where political intrigue and power struggles shaped nations. As we gaze upon this image from our private collection today, it reminds us not only of past conflicts but also serves as a testament to human resilience and determination.
