5920371 Indian NCOs of the Guides cavalry, 1879 (b/w photo) by Burke, John (fl.1878-79); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Indian NCOs of the Guides cavalry, 1879.
Photograph by John Burke, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1879.
The QueenAs Own Corps of Guides, formed in 1846 by Lieutenant Harry D. Lumsden in Peshawar, were the first military force to adopt khaki as a service dress. The Guides consisted of a unique combination of infantry companies and cavalry squadrons. The North West Frontier where they operated was rarely quiet and although many other cavalry and infantry regiments served there, none was engaged more frequently than the elite Guides. They also saw service in the 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), initially with the Peshawar Field Force at Ali Masjid. The Guides also fought at Fattehabad (2 April 1879), Asmai Heights and Sherpur cantonment (December 1879) and in many other smaller skirmishes during the campaign.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a group of Indian NCOs of the Guides cavalry in 1879. Taken by John Burke during the 2nd Afghan War, this image showcases the elite military force known as The Queen's Own Corps of Guides. Led by Lieutenant Harry D. Lumsden, they were pioneers in adopting khaki as their service dress. The Guides were a unique combination of infantry companies and cavalry squadrons, operating primarily on the North West Frontier. This region was constantly embroiled in conflict, making it a challenging and dangerous environment for these brave soldiers. Despite numerous other regiments serving there, none experienced more frequent engagements than the esteemed Guides. During the 2nd Afghan War, they played significant roles in various battles such as Fattehabad, Asmai Heights, and Sherpur cantonment. Additionally, they participated in numerous smaller skirmishes throughout the campaign. This particular photograph is part of an album containing 28 images captured by John Burke between 1878 and 1897. Preserved at London's National Army Museum, it offers a glimpse into the rich history and valorous contributions made by these Indian NCOs who served with distinction under challenging circumstances.
