The Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805, early 19th century (oil on canvas)

7337703 The Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805, early 19th century (oil on canvas) by Drummond, Samuel (1765-1844); 146.6x228.6 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Samuel Drummond
A highly stylized interpretation of the Battle of Trafalgar. The artist has framed the painting by positioning two ships on either side of the composition. On the left in the foreground a British frigate, possibly the Euryalus, is shown bow on, with shot holes in her foresail. The ship in the right foreground is half out of the picture space with dark sails silhouetted for dramatic effect. In the middle distance on the left the Victory is in action, in starboard-quarter view. She is mistakenly shown with her original stern galleries, before she was rebuilt with a closed stern. Beyond her in the left background is the Santissima Trinidad in action, in port-broadside view. To starboard of the Victory, partially obscured by smoke are the sterns of the Redoutable and possibly the Temeraire'. To the right of this trio a British two-decker, in port bow view, is firing into a dismasted two-decker also in bow view. Further to the right and closer is a frigate in stern view. Beyond her in the background is the stern of the Royal Sovereign breaking the enemy line, and in the right background are more ships in action. The burning Achille is visible on the far right. In the central foreground a group of French or Spanish sailors are shown amid wreckage, desperately clinging to a large spar, and there are other sailors in the water. Two British ship's boats approach to rescue them from the left and the right, their officers standing up, gesturing and issuing instructions.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle of Trafalgar, captured in this stunning oil on canvas painting by Samuel Drummond, is a highly stylized interpretation of the historic naval battle that took place on 21 October 1805. The artist skillfully frames the composition with two ships positioned on either side, creating a sense of drama and action. In the foreground, a British frigate with shot holes in her foresail is depicted alongside another ship with dark sails silhouetted against the backdrop. In the middle distance, the iconic 'Victory' is shown in starboard-quarter view, engaging in battle. The 'Santissima Trinidad', one of the largest warships of its time, can be seen in action to the left. Amidst the chaos of battle, French and Spanish sailors are shown clinging to wreckage and desperately trying to survive. Two British ship's boats approach from both sides to rescue them, their officers standing up and issuing instructions. The level of detail and emotion captured in this painting truly brings to life one of history's most famous naval battles. From burning ships to brave rescues at sea, every element tells a story of courage and sacrifice on both sides. This print serves as a powerful reminder of the bravery displayed by all those involved in The Battle of Trafalgar.
