The Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805, beginning of the action, early 19th century (oil on canvas)

7337705 The Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805, beginning of the action, early 19th century (oil on canvas) by Buttersworth, Thomas (1768-1842); 60x92 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Thomas Buttersworth
In the right foreground is the French ship Bucentaure in starboard-bow view, with her mizzen mast and main topgallant mast shot away. In port-bow view and passing astern of her is the British Neptune, delivering raking fire. Astern of her and only half in the picture is the Leviathan port bow view. In the left foreground the Santissima Trinidad is shown in port bow view. Her main and mizzen masts and fore-topgallant mast are being shot away by the Victory, which is passing astern of her as she breaks the line. Only her stern, in port-quarter view, can be seen and her mizzen topmast is falling. Beyond her, also in port-quarter view, is the Redoutable with the Temeraire's stern seen on her starboard side, the latter also engaged with the Spanish Neptuno'. In the centre background is the Euryalus frigate, in port-quarter view, and the bow of the Royal Sovereign can be seen as she breaks the line astern of the Santa Ana, in starboard-bow view losing her main topmast. A mast and top with a yard and sail is in the water in the centre foreground. This painting is one of a pair, the other showing the storm after the battle (see BHC0554). EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil on canvas painting by Thomas Buttersworth captures the intense beginning of The Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805. In intricate detail, Buttersworth depicts the French ship 'Bucentaure' in a starboard-bow view, with her masts already being shot away. The British ship 'Neptune' can be seen delivering raking fire as she passes astern, while the 'Leviathan' lurks just beyond. The 'Santissima Trinidad', one of the largest warships of its time, is shown in port bow view with her masts under fire from the British ship 'Victory'. The chaos and destruction of battle are palpable as masts fall and sails catch fire. In the background, other ships like the 'Redoutable', 'Temeraire', and 'Euryalus' are engaged in fierce combat as well. The sheer scale and intensity of this historic naval battle are brought to life through Buttersworth's masterful brushstrokes. This painting is part of a pair that also includes a depiction of the storm after the battle. Buttersworth's attention to detail and ability to capture movement and emotion make this piece a true masterpiece that transports viewers back to one of history's most significant naval conflicts.
