Arab Kneeling in Prayer, c1875. Creator: Charles Bargue
Arab Kneeling in Prayer, c1875. Charles Bargue produced relatively few paintings and is best known for his prints and drawing manuals. In his early career, he produced lithographs after his own comedic genre paintings as well as the nudes and genre scenes of others. Bargue never showed his paintings at the Salon but did exhibit a series of reproductive lithographs at the Salons of 1867 and 1868. He died insane in a mental asylum in April 1883. He was largely forgotten for a long time, but in recent years, has begun to attract increasing market and scholarly interest. Bargue has often been cited as a pupil of Gerome, but contemporary texts stress that he was an assistant and collaborator. The two men worked together on the first two volumes of a major drawing manual, "Cours de Dessin, " which was published in three parts between 1868 and 1872

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Arab Kneeling in Prayer," is a captivating work by the French artist Charles Bargue, created around 1875. Bargue is known primarily for his prints and drawing manuals, although he produced relatively few paintings. In his early career, he collaborated with other artists, producing lithographs after their works, as well as his own comedic genre paintings and nudes. Bargue's "Arab Kneeling in Prayer" is a poignant depiction of an Arab man in deep devotion. The man wears a simple tunic and is barefoot, his feet resting on the earth. His head is bowed low, and his eyes are closed in concentration, with his hands folded in front of him. The man's headdress, a traditional part of his attire, adds to the sense of otherworldliness and reverence. Bargue's mastery of charcoal on smooth moderately thick blued white wove paper is evident in the intricate details of the man's clothing, the folds of his tunic, and the texture of his headdress. The use of black and white adds to the timeless and contemplative nature of the image. Bargue's relationship with Jean-Léon Gérôme is a subject of debate, with some sources citing him as a pupil, while others stressing that he was an assistant and collaborator. Together, they produced the first two volumes of a major drawing manual, "Cours de Dessin," which was published in three parts between 1868 and 1872. Despite his contributions to the art world, Bargue's later life was marked by mental instability, and he died in a mental asylum in 1883. He was largely forgotten for many years but has recently begun to attract increasing market and scholarly interest. This powerful and evocative image is a testament to Bargue's artistic talent and his ability to capture the essence of human emotion and devotion.
