EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Cheapside Cross as it appeared in 1547, beautifully preserved by an unknown creator. Erected between 1291 and 1294 by King Edward I of England, this magnificent stone monument was part of a series of twelve Eleanor crosses dedicated to his beloved wife, Eleanor of Castile. Standing tall in the heart of London's City, Cheapside Cross symbolized both architectural grandeur and deep royal devotion. The image showcases a bustling scene from the past, with people gathered around the cross on a busy avenue. Horses trot gracefully along the lane while a crowd watches attentively, captivated by some form of processional pageantry or royal visit taking place. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of nostalgia to this snapshot from sixteenth-century England. Published in "Old and New London" by Walter Thornbury in 1897 under Cassell and Company Ltd. , this photograph offers us a glimpse into history through its intricate details. It reminds us that even centuries later, we can still appreciate the beauty and significance of these ancient landmarks that have shaped our country's heritage. As we gaze upon this print today, we are transported back to another time - a time when Cheapside Cross stood proudly as a testament to love and legacy amidst the bustling streets of old London town.
