EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the Christening of the Infant Prince Arthur in the Royal Chapel at Buckingham Palace, London, in 1850, we witness a significant moment in British royal history. The scene unfolds as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert make their entrance into the chapel, accompanied by the March in Handel's Occasional Oratorio. The Archbishop of Canterbury, John Bird Sumner, commences the baptismal service, and the Countess of Gainsborough presents the infant Prince to the Archbishop for naming. The Queen, resplendent in a dress of white watered and brocaded silk, adorned with Honiton lace and white satin ribbon, wears a diadem of emeralds and diamonds, as well as ornaments of emeralds and diamonds to correspond. The infant Prince, dressed in a robe and mantle of Honiton lace over white satin, with a cap to match, is held by the Archbishop. The Christening of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, took place in the presence of various courtiers and dignitaries, including the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, who would later become the Emperor of India. The event was documented in the Illustrated London News, providing a glimpse into the grandeur and tradition of the British monarchy during the 19th century. This evocative image captures the essence of a royal occasion, transporting us back in time to an era of elegance, pomp, and pageantry.
