The Creation of Adam, modelled by J. Physick, 1850. Creator: Unknown
The Creation of Adam, modelled by J. Physick, 1850. This figure, illustrative of the "Creation of Adam, " has just been modelled by Mr. James Physick, and has obtained for him the honour of studying abroad: the decision having been given at a general assembly of the Royal Academicians, in Trafalgar-square...The height of the figure is about seven feet. The subject is from Milton's great work [Paradise Lost]: "As new waked from soundest sleep, Soft on the flow'ry herb I found me laid In balmy sweat, which with his beams the sun Soon dry'd, and on the reeking moisture fed. Straight toward Heav'n my wond'ring eyes I turn'd, And gazed awhile the ample sky, till raised By quick instinctive motion, up I sprung." Paradise Lost, Book viii'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the figure of Adam, modeled by James Physick, during the creation process in 1850. The image, published in the Illustrated London News, documents the significant moment in Physick's career as he was granted the opportunity to study abroad following the decision of the Royal Academicians in Trafalgar Square. The figure, inspired by Milton's epic poem "Paradise Lost," stands at approximately seven feet tall. In the poem, Adam, newly created, lies on the flowery herb and gazes towards heaven, springing upwards in wonderment. The subject matter is derived from the Old Testament's Book of Genesis and the creation myth. The hand-carved statue, with its intricate details and expressive gestures, perfectly captures the essence of Milton's words. The print, a testament to the artisanal skills of the time, showcases the beauty and craftsmanship of the Victorian era. The figure of Adam, with his nakedness and raw emotion, adds to the religious and poetic undertones of the image, making it a timeless piece of art and literature.
