Crimean Heroes and Trophies, at Woolwich - from a photograph by J. Cundall and R. Howlett, 1856. Creator: Unknown

Crimean Heroes and Trophies, at Woolwich - from a photograph by J. Cundall and R. Howlett, 1856....Company Sergeant Christy (sitting), and Sergeant Samuel McGifford, both of the 4th Battalion, served throughout the siege of Sebastopol, and...luckily escaped without injury. The pictures, which they have converted into banners, were taken by these worthies from one of the churches of Sebastopol, where they decorated the wall. One picture is of St. Michael, the other of St. George and the Dragon. They are painted in a thoroughly Byzantine style, and in parts are illuminated with gold....The lad, William Lang, was barely thirteen years old when he first heard the whistling of cannon-balls on the banks of the Alma...He sounded his trumpet at Balaclava, at lnkerman, and during the whole siege of Sebastopol...This boy, now fifteen years old, returns...decorated...the youngest but not the least gallant hero of the war'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Crimean Heroes and Trophies, at Woolwich" by J. Cundall and R. Howlett, dates back to 1856. The image showcases a collection of Crimean War heroes and their trophies, proudly displayed in Woolwich. Among the distinguished men in the photograph are Company Sergeant Christy (seated) and Sergeant Samuel McGifford, both from the 4th Battalion. These brave soldiers had served throughout the siege of Sebastopol and fortunately managed to escape without injury. The pictures they are holding, which they had transformed into banners, were taken from one of the churches in Sebastopol where they had originally adorned the walls. One banner bears an image of St. Michael, while the other showcases St. George and the Dragon, both painted in a distinctively Byzantine style and intricately illuminated with gold. The young lad in the photograph, William Lang, was just thirteen years old when he first heard the ominous whistling of cannonballs on the banks of the Alma. Despite his tender age, he bravely sounded his trumpet at the Battle of Balaclava, at Inkerman, and throughout the entire siege of Sebastopol. Now fifteen years old, this young hero returns, decorated with honors, a testament to his unwavering courage and gallantry during the Crimean War.
