EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph captures the grandeur of the Entrance Hall at Rood Ashton, Wiltshire, during the mid-19th century. The artist duo Day & Haghe skillfully depicted this architectural masterpiece, once belonging to British politician Walter Hulme Long, 1st Viscount Long (1854-1924). This stately home was a residence befitting a man of his stature. Built in 1808 and later expanded in 1836, Rood Ashton House exuded elegance and sophistication. The intricate carved wooden panelling showcased exquisite craftsmanship that is visible in this print. It is a testament to the attention to detail that went into creating such an opulent space. Sadly, this magnificent country house met its demise in the 1970s when it was demolished. However, through this monochrome image, we can still appreciate its former glory and imagine stepping foot into its impressive Entrance Hall. The balconies overlooking the hall added an extra touch of grandeur to the space. One can only wonder what conversations took place on those balconies as guests marveled at their surroundings. This print serves as a reminder of both architectural excellence and historical significance. It allows us to glimpse into a bygone era when timbered houses like Rood Ashton House stood proudly amidst England's countryside.
