Hus transcript of Wycliffes treatise, early 15th century, (1947). Creator: Unknown

Hus transcript of Wycliffes treatise, early 15th century, (1947). The English scholar and reformer John Wycliffe (1320s-1384) and his followers completed the first translation of the Bible into English. Czech theologian Jan Hus (c1369-1415) shared Wycliffes ideas, and believed that religious services and texts should be in vernacular languages instead of Latin, which was understood by very few people. Hus was burned at the stake for heresy. From " History of Czechoslovakia in Outline" by J. V. Polisensky. [Sphinx Publishers Ltd, Prague, 1947]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant historical artifact - the Hus transcript of Wycliffe's treatise from the early 15th century. The creator of this remarkable piece remains unknown, but its importance cannot be understated. John Wycliffe, an English scholar and reformer, along with his followers, accomplished the groundbreaking task of translating the Bible into English for the first time. Jan Hus, a Czech theologian who shared Wycliffe's ideas, believed that religious services and texts should be accessible to all in vernacular languages rather than Latin. Unfortunately, his heretical beliefs led to his tragic fate as he was burned at the stake. The photograph is taken from "History of Czechoslovakia in Outline" by J. V. Polisensky published by Sphinx Publishers Ltd in Prague in 1947. It provides us with a glimpse into both medieval literature and politics during this transformative period. The image showcases intricate handwriting on aged manuscript pages that bear witness to Jan Hus' courageous stand against religious orthodoxy. This monochrome print not only serves as a reminder of Hus' unwavering faith but also highlights the power of language and belief systems throughout history. As we delve into this visual representation, we are reminded of how religion has shaped societies across centuries while igniting debates about accessibility and reform within Christianity itself.
