The International Exhibition - The Japanese Court, 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a fascinating photographic print showcasing a selection of Japanese artifacts, displayed at the International Exhibition in London. The creator of this image remains unknown, but it is known that the photograph was taken by the London Stereoscopic Company. This exhibition marked a significant moment in the Western world's introduction to Japanese culture, largely due to the efforts of Rutherford Alcock, Her Majesty's Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Japan. The photograph captures a rich and diverse display of Japanese art and artifacts. Among the items on show are 190 specimens of lacquer-ware, as well as numerous lacquer and enamelled objects made from ivory, tortoiseshell, and mother-of-pearl. In close proximity to these, Hakoni ware, a type of Chinese-influenced Japanese pottery, can be seen. The display also includes a range of Chinese and porcelain, as well as quaint forms of earthenware. Among the precious stones on show are a large ruby and equally large sapphire, both uncut. Several swords, commonly used in Japan, are exhibited, along with silks renowned for their softness. Scientific instruments, such as a quadrant, sundial, compass, pedometer, clock, thermometer, and telescope, are also on display. Elaborate carvings in ivory and wood, as well as curious-looking cloaks and hats made from a grass indigenous to Japan, complete the scene. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the culture and artistry of Japan during a pivotal moment in its relationship with the Western world.
