EDITORS COMMENTS
Isabella, Duchess of Grafton, laterly Countess of Arlington (Obit 1722, 1814) is a striking black and white portrait of the Duchess, created by the renowned English engraver Robert Dunkarton. The portrait is taken from Samuel Woodburn's publication "Portraits of characters illustrious in British History from the beginning of the reign of Henry the Eighth to the end of the reign of James the Second," published in London in 1815. The Duchess, born Isabella Bennet, was the daughter of Sir John Bennet and was married to Henry FitzRoy, 1st Duke of Grafton in 1678. The Duke was the illegitimate son of King Charles II and his mistress Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland. The marriage between Isabella and the Duke was a politically strategic one, as the Duke was a favorite of King Charles II and the marriage secured the King's favor for Isabella and her family. The portrait shows Isabella in the attire of the time, with a high-necked, long-sleeved dress, adorned with intricate lace and ruff collar. Her hair is styled in an elaborate updo, with a large, feathered headdress adding to the grandeur of the portrait. The background is simple, with a plain, dark backdrop, allowing the Duchess to stand out in her elegance and sophistication. Isabella's marriage to the Duke was a happy one, and they had several children together. However, tragedy struck when the Duke died in 1685, and Isabella remarried, this time to Charles, 3rd Earl of Arlington. She passed away in 1722, and this portrait serves as a lasting tribute to her beauty and status as a prominent figure in British history. The portrait is a testament to the fashion of the seventeenth century, with its intricate clothing and attention to detail, and is a valuable addition to any collection of historical portraits. The skillful engraving by Robert Dunkarton brings the Duchess to life, capturing her essence and preserving her legacy for future generations.
