EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts one of fourteen bridges constructed over the Upper Isonzo River in the Anhovo region, north of Plave, during the Italian Offensive of 1917. The Italian troops, seen in the foreground, are making their way across the footbridge, which was essential for the passage of troops and supplies during the battles of the Isonzo. The Isonzo Front, also known as the Soca Front, was a significant battleground during World War I, with the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies engaging in numerous clashes between 1915 and 1917. The aerial view of the bridge and its surroundings offers a unique perspective, revealing the rocky terrain and the meandering river below. The bridge's construction was a crucial logistical feat, allowing the Italian army to access the northern front and gain ground against the Austro-Hungarian forces. The image is taken from L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2, published by L'Illustration in Paris in 1924. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War and the importance of strategic military maneuvers in shaping the course of history.
