EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white portrait captures the essence of James Fraser, Bishop of Manchester in 1878. The photograph, taken by renowned photographers Lock & Whitfield, showcases a man distinguished in both appearance and accomplishments. James Fraser's deep-set wrinkles tell the story of a life dedicated to service and intellectual pursuits. His sideburns frame his face with an air of wisdom, while his clerical collar symbolizes his commitment to Christianity. Dressed impeccably in Victorian attire, he exudes authority and sophistication. Fraser's impressive qualifications are reflected in this image; he was not only a bishop but also held positions as a prebendary at Salisbury Cathedral and taught at Oriel College. Known for his progressive views on education and women's rights, Fraser wrote influential reports on these topics as well as the employment of women and children in agriculture. Appointed by Prime Minister Gladstone himself, Fraser's appointment as Bishop of Manchester solidified his status among men distinguished in the Senate, Church, science, literature, art, army, navy law medicine - all fields represented within Men of Mark: A Gallery of Contemporary Portraits. Lock & Whitfield have expertly captured the essence of this remarkable man through their lens.
