EDITORS COMMENTS
Memorial Triptych, formerly known as the Gertz Memorial Triptych, is a stunning 16th-century oil on panel painting, currently housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The triptych, which dates back to around 1527, is a copy after the original work by the renowned Flemish painter Hugo van der Goes. The central panel of the triptych depicts the Lamentation of Christ, a poignant scene from the New Testament where the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist mourn the dead body of Jesus. The emotion-laden scene is beautifully rendered, with the Virgin and Mary Magdalene shown in deep grief, their faces etched with sorrow. The left and right wings of the triptych each contain three panels. The left wing features nine male donor portraits, including that of Willem Gertz, the original owner of the triptych, and his nine companions. Each man is depicted in prayerful contemplation, with Saint John the Evangelist featured prominently in the innermost panel. The right wing contains nine female donor portraits, with the Virgin and Child in the innermost panel. The women are shown in various poses, some in prayer, others in quiet reflection. The outer panels feature Saint Peter and Saint Mary Magdalene, two important figures in Christian history. The triptych's rich colors and intricate details bring the story of the Lamentation to life, making it a powerful and moving work of art that continues to captivate viewers today. The lettering on the triptych, which includes the inscription "Claesgens Dirck," is a testament to its history and heritage. The Memorial Triptych is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of art, particularly the Renaissance period in the Low Countries.
