EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the late 18th century, offering a glimpse into the intriguing world of Franz Anton Mesmer and his pioneering therapy sessions. In 1779, Mesmer established his consulting room in Paris, where this mesmerizing scene unfolded. At the center of attention is Mesmers tub, a large vat filled with dilute sulphuric acid. Patients seeking treatment would gather around it, either holding hands or grasping one of the iron bars protruding from its sides. This unique setup was believed to harness the power of magnetism animal, as described in Mesmer's treatise Memoire sur la decouverte de magnetism animal. The image captures an intimate moment inside the therapy room - individuals engrossed in their own experiences while being surrounded by others seeking solace and healing. The monochrome palette adds an air of mystery and intrigue to this historical snapshot. Mesmerism was a revolutionary concept at that time, challenging conventional medical practices. It aimed to restore balance within patients' bodies through magnetic forces present in both animate and inanimate objects. This engraving serves as a testament to Mesmer's influence on alternative medicine during this period. As we explore this print further, we are transported back centuries ago when science merged with mysticism, creating an atmosphere ripe for exploration and discovery.
