The new uniforms for the Light Infantry and Cavalry, 1854. Creator: Unknown
The new uniforms for the Light Infantry and Cavalry, 1854....the Light Infantry regiments are to wear a shako, light in construction to the one now in use, and more graceful. The small ball, the substitute for the feather, will be retained, and the number of the regiment will be conspicuously displayed in front. The coat will be a tunic or short frock, scarlet in colour, and double breasted. The collar will be low and open, with embroidered gold lace in crowns and stars, denoting the rank of the officer...The new Infantry design is from an English house, Messrs. Moore and Co. of James's street. The new dressing-case, portfolio, and despatch bag...is from the design of Mr. West, of St. James's- street. It may be remarked that the change in the Light Cavalry uniform is perfectly German. The new dress, as tested on Saturday last, consists of a rounded tunic...with a profusion of lace ending in "frogs"'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image from the Illustrated London News in 1854 showcases the new uniforms for the Light Infantry and Cavalry regiments of the British Army. The Light Infantry regiments are depicted wearing a sleek shako, a lighter and more elegant version of the current headgear, with a small ball replacing the traditional feather. The number of the regiment is prominently displayed in front. The coat, a tunic or short frock, is scarlet in color and double-breasted. The collar is adorned with intricate gold lace in the form of crowns and stars, denoting the rank of the officer. The new uniform design for the Infantry is credited to Messrs. Moore and Co. of James's Street. Accompanying the new uniform is a stylish dressing-case, portfolio, and despatch bag, designed by Mr. West of St. James's- Street. The transformation in the Light Cavalry uniform is evident in the image, with the rounded tunic and an abundance of lace adorning the sleeves, ending in "frogs." This new design, as tested on the previous Saturday, is reminiscent of German military fashion. The elegance and sophistication of these new uniforms reflect the evolving trends and advancements in military fashion during the mid-19th century.
