Pizzofalcone and Castello dell'Uovo, at Naples, 1857. Creator: Unknown

Pizzofalcone and Castello dell'Uovo, at Naples, 1857. Castello dell'Uovo...is situated on a small rocky island, once called Megari, and derives its name from its shape. It was built by William I. in 1154...in 1221, King Frederic completed and much strengthened the building. In the fifteenth century King James fled to this castle from the persecutions of his wife, the Queen Johanna...it has always been deemed an important point by the Sovereigns of this country. Weak for external resistance, it is strong for the maintenance of the order of the city, and to such an object it seems now to be appropriated. Standing at the apex of an angle it commands both Santa Lucia and Chiutamone, and its outer walls are prepared with holes for musketry...[It] is one of the main props of the throne of King Ferdinand, and perhaps no other part of the city gives a better idea of the security of the King...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1857, showcases the breathtaking view of Pizzofalcone and the Castello dell'Uovo, two iconic landmarks of Naples, Italy. The Castello dell'Uovo, also known as the Castle of the Egg, is situated on a small island at the end of the Neapolitan harbor. Its unique shape and strategic location have made it an essential fortification since its construction in 1154 by William I. The castle derives its name from its distinctive egg-like form and was further fortified in 1221 by King Frederic. Throughout history, it has served as a refuge for kings, most notably King James, who sought shelter from his wife, Queen Johanna, during her persecutions in the fifteenth century. The castle's importance to the monarchy is evident, as it stands at the apex of an angle, commanding both Santa Lucia and Chiutamone. Its outer walls are prepared with holes for musketry, making it a formidable defense against external threats. In the mid-nineteenth century, the castle remained a crucial prop for the throne of King Ferdinand, providing a symbol of the security and power of the Neapolitan monarchy. The photograph captures the castle's grandeur and historical significance, offering a glimpse into the rich history of Naples. The Pizzofalcone, a volcanic hill that overlooks the city, adds to the picturesque scene, creating a stunning contrast between the natural and man-made wonders of this remarkable city.
