EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the beloved consort of Queen Victoria. Created by artist George Baxter in 1910, this portrait captures the essence of a man who played a significant role in British history. Prince Albert, born in 1819, married his first cousin Queen Victoria in 1840. Throughout their marriage, he served as her private advisor and was granted the title Prince Consort in 1857. Known for his wide-ranging interests in arts, science, and industry, Prince Albert was instrumental in planning the Great Exhibition of 1851. Tragically, his life was cut short by typhoid fever in 1861. This devastating loss deeply affected Queen Victoria; she mourned him for the remaining four decades of her reign. In this portrait, Prince Albert stands tall wearing a military uniform adorned with epaulettes and an ostrich feather sash. His regal presence is accentuated by a sword at his side and a distinguished hat atop his head. The image exudes strength and nobility while capturing the essence of Victorian fashion. It serves as a poignant reminder of both Prince Albert's influential role within British society and the enduring love between him and Queen Victoria. This historical print from The Connoisseur offers us a glimpse into an era long past—a time when royalty held immense power on both personal and political levels.
